Targeted Research Related to Climate Change

Targeted Research Related to Climate Change is a climate change enabling activity and targeted research project funded by the GEF and the Government of China, implemented by the UNDP, and executed by the Chinese State Development Planning Commission. The principal aim of the project is to enable China to strengthen and develop capacity in research areas of relevance to compliance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (UNFCCC) and to generate research results that may be used in formulating climate change related policy. Research activities of the project may be grouped in three general areas: (1) Capacity development related to determining greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from specific sectors will improve China's capacity to prepare national emissions inventories to be submitted as a part of future National Communications under the requirements of the Convention. (2) Targeted research to strengthen and develop capacity and obtain results in modeling the impacts of GHG emissions on climate in China will provide climate-related natural disaster scenarios, a basis of climate scenarios from which to evaluate vulnerability and adaptation options in other sectors, and related results with which to inform policy and improve the quality of future National Communications, particularly with regard to the required description of policy related steps to implement the Convention. (3) Targeted research to strengthen and develop capacity and obtain results on vulnerability of and adaptation options for key sectors will also inform policy and adaptation strategies, thus facilitating improved quality of the descriptions of policy-related steps included in future National Communications.
