The project would aim to strengthen the conservation of globally significant biodiversity to promote sustainable management of Guinea Bissau's coastal biodiversity for both conservation and sustainable development ends. In conjunction with an IDA credit, this project would implement biodiversity conservation components of the National Coastal Zone Management Plan. There are six principal project components: (a) establishment of a sustainable institutional framework for biodiversity conservation and management; (b) Biodiversity conservation and protected areas management; (c) sustainable biodiversity management-based community development; (d) improved fisheries conservation and management; (e) establishment of environmental and social regulatory safeguards, and (f) program management, monitoring and evaluation. GEF contribution substantively finance components (a) and (b) above, but will contribute to other activities as well, except for component (e) on environmental and social safeguards.
