Corazon Transboundary Biosphere Reserve

The global objective of the proposed project is to consolidate the management and protection of Nicaragua’s and Honduras’ proposed Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve “Corazón de Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano” (henceforth “Corazón Reserve”), simultaneously strengthening the PA systems as a whole of the two countries. The Corazón Reserve extends in Honduras from the Plátano Biosphere Reserve through the Tawakha Indigenous Reserve and Patuca National Park, to the Bosawas Reserve in Nicaragua and includes adjacent areas of natural habitat in the Mosquitia. In total this is an area of about 50,000 km2 (5 million ha) and is the largest single block of unaltered tropical forest north of Colombia – it truly represents the “heart” of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor (MBC). The Nicaraguan and Honduran governments are in the process of working with UNESCO on the formal creation of the Reserve.
