planetGOLD Philippines: Youth for responsible gold

The use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) has been a tradition passed down through generations in many rural communities in the Philippines, often without awareness of its dangers to the health of entire communities. However, this harmful practice can be changed, particularly with the younger generation stepping up as advocates for reform. In celebration of Children’s Month in 2023, the Artisanal Gold Council Philippines, through the planetGOLD Philippines project, launched the “Youth for Responsible Gold” educational roadshow to engage youth in promoting safer, cleaner, more equitable, and responsible mining practices.

The campaign took place in Sagada, Mt. Province, where educational activities were held at Fidelisan Elementary School and Bangaan National High School, with approximately 400 students and teachers participating. The students engaged in storytelling sessions featuring Mina Minera and Miko, Maya, and the Golden Valley, which highlighted the roles of women miners and how ASGM livelihood can be balanced with environmental stewardship. Art contests, mural painting, and interactive games encouraged creativity while deepening participants’ understanding of responsible mining in a fun and engaging way. Additionally, a screening of the documentary series Power of Gold: Stories from the Ground shed light on the dangers of mercury and showcased the contributions of women to ASGM.

During the event, Ezra Marie Soliaban and Joseff Macalo stood out as Youth for Responsible Gold Champions, showcasing exceptional creativity and leadership.

The roadshow will continue in 2025, with plans to replicate the event in Paracale, Camarines Norte—another ASGM community. By expanding its reach, the initiative aims to inspire more young advocates to join the movement for mercury-free and responsible mining practices.

This campaign is part of planetGOLD Philippines project's ongoing commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of mercury in ASGM and promoting safer alternatives. Over the years, the project has developed a wide array of educational and informational materials (EIC) to reach diverse audiences. These include printed and digital media, exhibit booths, radio programs, and strategic media engagement initiatives.

Each resource is designed to inform the public about mercury's harmful effects on health and the environment, while supporting the transition of ASGM communities toward mercury-free mining practices. Through these efforts, the project continues to empower communities with the knowledge and tools to embrace responsible and mercury-free mining.
