Minamata Online: Global change and biogeochemical mercury cycling

Minamata Online Virtual 22 - 22 Jul 2021

On 22 July, Minamata Online held the first event of the season, a session on “Global change and biogeochemical mercury cycling”.

This first session of the mercury science stream of the Minamata Online Season 2 addressed interactions between biogeochemical mercury cycling and climate change. This topic, in preparation for the 2022 ICMGP plenary lecture and synthesis paper, presented an outline on mercury and climate change issues, and looked in more detail at two outstanding science issues: First, the potential influence of ocean warming and fishery pressure on fish methylmercury levels, and second, the potential release of large amounts of mercury that are present in northern permafrost soils.
