In order for Zambia to implement its obligations under the Minamata Convention, it is imperative that strategies to identify and protect populations at risk to mercury exposure are developed and implemented, including strategies on public information and awareness. The project will conduct an in-depth national survey on populations vulnerable to mercury exposure. Education and training materials to raise public awareness related to the effects of exposure to mercury and mercury compounds on human health will be developed. The project will also evaluate the extent of use of products listed in Annex A of the Minamata Convention. The project will develop strategies on monitoring mercury in biota and on the phase-out of mercury-added products including skin lightening creams and soaps.
The overall objective of this project is to support Zambia in implementing the obligations of the Minamata Convention by reducing the presence of mercury in vulnerable populations as provided for under Articles 16 and 18.
