The project objective is to increase the climate resiliency of Coronie District through the implementation of climate smart agriculture (CSA) technologies in the face of drought and saltwater intrusion as a result of climate change. This will be achieved through four interrelated components: 1) Building capacity for climate change resilience; 2) Implementation of water resource management by micro-irrigation and rainwater harvesting; 3) Implementation of climate smart agricultural drought resistant crops; and 4) monitoring and evaluation. The project will overcome the following barriers: 1) Limited access to climate and hydrological information particularly as it affects local water management and agriculture production in the region; 2) Lack of institutional capacity to plan around climate change risks and regulate land and water management as well as to implement technical solutions and provide extension services; 3) Limited investment in community water solutions and irrigation techniques; and 4) Limited technical capacities within the agricultural sector to implement and finance adaptation solutions to increasing saline and drought conditions. This strategy will be implemented in Suriname’s Coronie District and will deliver the following adaptation and environmental benefits: 7,375 hectares managed for climate resilience, 50 hectares of agricultural lands restored, and 3,391 people (women: 1,644; men: 1,747; youth: 543; elderly: 271; indigenous peoples: 0) benefiting from this GEF/SCCF investment. The project will last 3.5 years.
