The Benin Minamata Initial Assessment (MIA), as finalized in 2017, revealed a number of shortcomings for the effective implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Benin. In order to fill these gaps, national priorities were identified in the MIA. This includes the management of products and items indexed in Annex I-A of the Convention.
This project aims to strengthen Benin's capacity to meet its obligations as a party to the Minamata Convention by improving the management framework of mercury-containing products and their wastes. This project is also in line with national objectives defined in the Government's Action Program (PAG2016-2021), namely to improve the living environment and the well-being of all Beninese on the one hand, and strengthen social services basic and social protection on the other.
The objective of the project is to improve the management framework of mercury-containing products and their wastes.
