Gdansk Cycling Infrastructure Project

Project rationale and objectives: The project will reduce transport-derived greenhouse gas emissions by developing a model infrastructure facility program in Gdansk to help individual citizens change their primary mode of transport from cars to bicycles. The model - and the experience gained - will be disseminated at the national level to help other local authorities develop similar, cost-efficient infrastructure measures and policies. The project objectives and activities are as follows:(a)Promote cycling as an urban transport mode in order to avoid emissions from cars and to help a more efficient use of public transport. (b)Provide a working example with a one-time investment that will give people a chance to use a less polluting, energy-efficient mode of transport safely.(c) Disseminate the experience and data collected in the project city of Gdansk among other provinces, local governments, and financial institutions focusing on environment and development.(d) Monitor and evaluate transport behaviour and costs incurred to achieve greenhouse gas mitigation and other measurable benefits.(e) Remove institutional, legal, cultural, financial, and information/ awareness barriers to wider bicycle use as a means of urban transportation
