On 24 September, the Governing Board of the Specific International Programme (SIP) met virtually to keep supporting capacity-building and technical assistance to the Convention. It was the first meeting of the Board in its 2026–2027 composition. Members from all five UN regions took part: Madagascar, South Africa, Iraq, Lithuania, Montenegro, Guyana, Belgium and the Netherlands. The Board elected its Co-Chairs for the new term: Mr. Obed Meringo Baloyi (South Africa) was re-elected, and Ms. Eveline Verhaar (the Netherlands) was elected.
Since 2018, the Programme has supported 34 projects in 31 countries, with demand continuing across successive application rounds. The seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-7) in 2027 will consider the possible extension of the Programme, while the third review of the financial mechanism is under way. Against this background, the Board considered preparations for a possible fifth round of applications, as well as the funding and staffing requirements for the continued implementation of the Programme. Members reaffirmed the importance of supporting eligible countries in implementing their obligations under the Minamata Convention. The Board will meet again online on 1 December 2026.
