The Forest and Water Day takes place during the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP-16), and aims to promote the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of forests and water-related ecosystems for the successful implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and global commitments like the Minamata Convention.
Among several thematic sessions during the day, the Minamata Convention leads and participates in discussions on "Building peace: sustainable use of water-related ecosystems among all stakeholders", connecting the GBF with the daily realities around water use, discussing actions towards conservation and sustainability, and the reduction of impacts on biodiversity.
From 15h30 to 17h15 COT, two discussion panels featuring representatives from national and sub-national governments, Indigenous Peoples and major stakeholder groups will share their experiences and examples of how they are engaging governments and society at different levels to ensure that water-related ecosystems are sustainably managed for the benefit of all stakeholders and as a driver for peace:
- Panel 1: "Engaging all levels of government for the sustainable use of water-related ecosystems to benefit all stakeholders", moderated by the Secretariat of the Minamata Convention.
- Panel 2: "Engaging all segments of society for the sustainable use of water-related ecosystems to benefit all stakeholders", moderated by Women4Biodiversity and with the participation of the Secretariat.
