The Minamata Convention Secretariat contributed online to the Capacity-building workshop: Implementation of biodiversity and chemicals and waste Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), organized by UNEP - Law Division.
The workshop, taking place in Dakar from 26 to 28 November 2024, aimed to strengthen coherent and synergistic implementation of MEAs at the national level, by providing an opportunity to exchange information and best practices in the Western and Central African Region. It focused on whole-of-government approaches through improved cooperation and coordination among the national focal points working across the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC).
Through several online presentations, the Minamata Convention Secretariat highlighted how the Convention can serve as an entry point for integrated implementation, showcasing practical actions and tools that promote collaboration across biodiversity and chemical management frameworks.
Focusing on actionable synergies, the Secretariat emphasized how national reporting processes and tools, such as the National Action Plans (NAPs) for artisanal and small-scale gold mining, can enhance cross-framework coherence. The Secretariat also illustrated opportunities to streamline efforts and reduce duplication by sharing snapshots of the Online Reporting Tool.
Other Secretariats like the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm, Migratory Species, and Biological Diversity also contributed to setting the stage for strengthened, integrated implementation of MEAs. The workshop outputs will guide UNEP's future work, ensuring a cohesive approach to global environmental governance.
