On 14 May, The Minamata Convention Secretariat participated in a side event organized by the UN Biodiversity Secretariat, aligned with SBSTTA-26 agenda item 4, which focuses on the scientific and technical needs to support the implementation of The Biodiversity Plan.

The Secretariat showcased work on how coherent implementation of the Minamata Convention and The Biodiversity Plan can generate multiple benefits to society.

The Twenty-sixth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-26), taking place this week in Nairobi, Kenya, will consider adopting a recommendation recognizing that further work on the interlinkages between pollution and biodiversity are needed to support the full implementation of The Biodiversity Plan.

This meeting is a crucial step towards the UN Biodiversity COP-16 to be held from 21 October to 1 November 2024, in Cali, Colombia.
